In addition to the clinical examination by an experienced doctor, dermatoscopy (dermatoscopy, epiluminescent microscopy) plays the most significant role in the early detection of melanoma.
The method is non-invasive, simple, and saves lives. Using a small microscope, light is introduced under the skin to observe structures, colors, and shapes that are invisible to the naked eye. In this way, early melanoma diagnosis is improved by 30%, especially for melanomas smaller than 6 mm.
A patient with incurable skin cancer has received the first experimental cancer vaccine. Scientists believe this vaccine will treat various cancers. Is there a reason for optimism? We ask Dr. Jadran Bandic.
Dr. Bandic: When sunbathing, be careful not to get sunburned, avoid the period from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery specialist Dr. Jadran Bandic stated today that citizens must be cautious when sunbathing to avoid sunburn in order to prevent skin damage. He added that sun exposure between 10 AM and 5 PM in July is unsafe.
Speaking about sun protection measures during the summer period, Bandic emphasized that sunscreen is important, but the primary prevention is not getting sunburned. He mentioned that July is the hottest month on the Mediterranean, and due to this, it is safe to sunbathe in the morning between 9 and 10 AM, as the sun at this time has the strongest power to build immunity without causing damage. "It is unsafe from 10 AM to 5 PM in July, but it is safe to sunbathe from 5 to 6 PM, as the sun again has a good strength to build immunity," Bandic told Tanjug.
Bandic also pointed out that in August, the time changes by an hour, so sun exposure is safe until 11 AM, while the period from 11 AM to 4 PM should be avoided.
"In September, it is safe to sunbathe between 11 and 12 AM, and from 3 to 4 PM. This is when you can sunbathe without sunscreen, build immunity, and not experience skin damage that is dangerous for cancers. This is the first protection measure," explained Bandic. He emphasized that the sun is important for immunity and that there are no supplements that can replace vitamin D, but it is important to be mindful of the time of day when going outside and sunbathing.
He also advised that when spending time in the sun during unsafe periods, it is necessary to wear clothing with SPF and to cover oneself with such clothing. "Only then, apply sunscreen on exposed areas during unsafe times, but again, sunscreen should not be used excessively because even with sunscreen, you don’t get vitamin D," he said.
Bandic advised citizens that when the sun exposure is unsafe, they should stay as much as possible in the shade where there is plenty of grass and no large water surfaces. He added that most skin cancers are caused by sun exposure, which is also shown by a study from the UK.
